Col Georges-Cpl Hansberry-Senator Rafferty |
|
Westover Country Club, Jeffersonville PA, July 2007 |
Now this was a pretty neat event . . . Francis J. Hansberry, my father-in-law, otherwise known as Frank
Hansberry, beat it out of Gelnhausen Germany ASAP when his Army hitch was up. I think the Bier
Meisters may have been after him, or something - he doesn't talk about it much. (Ich denke, dass Frank die Totenbahre
Meisters beleidigte, weil er Budweiser bestellte!) Anyway, he didn't wait around to receive the medals he was entitled
to at the time. But thanks to U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, the U.S. Army dug up Frank's records, and two distinguished
gentlemen came to his 73rd birthday party at Westover to honor him with his awards. Senator John Rafferty and Colonel Jim Georges graciously presented Frank with words of appreciation for his service, and his medals, i.e. the Army Good
Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation-Germany, and National Defense Service Medal. Frank's family was present, and
is grateful to Senator Rafferty and Col. Georges for their kindness.

PVT Earl V. McNerney - WW1
My Great Uncle Mick (1900-1968)
|
|
|
Uncle Mick (Great Uncle Earl V. McNerney)
used to live above The Playmakers on East Church Street in Lock Haven PA. When I was little, I remember rolling on his
and Aunt Mary's hassock (Mary Ryan McNerney) in their living room, and sitting on their front porch. They used to walk
me over to the Widman-Teah Drug Store at Bellefonte Avenue and Church Street and get me a chocolate soda at their soda fountain. I
remember when they moved across the street to 40 East Church Street, two doors from the City Hall, and eventually The Playmakers building
was torn down - 40 is still there today. I remember when Bud Yost Sr. bought it. It had a big old oxhart
cherry tree in the back yard. I loved those cherries. Uncle Mick worked at the Lock Haven State Teachers College,
now Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in the maintance department. It
was called The Normal School when my mother and Aunt Emma went there. After Uncle Mick died in 1968, Aunt Mary stayed
on at 40 East Church until she was infirmed and had to move to the Extended Care Unit at the Lock Haven Hospital, where she
died in 1999. Diane and I had lunch with Sister Borgia, Aunt Mary's Niece Joan O'Donnell, [Sister Francis Borgia
O'Donnell, IHM] at Foxes Restaurant after Aunt Mary's funeral in 1999. Sister has been working with the CCD Program at Saint Mary of The Mount Parish in Pittsburgh for the past 12 years. Here's some more info and photos.
