RADM Samuel W. Hubbard USN (Ret) |
|
|
USS Kitty Hawk |
|
CVA-63 |
I had emails from Admiral Hubbard in 2008.
He retired in 1983 and is doing well. I served under him when he was Flag Lieutenant/Staff Aide to ComCarDiv
4 in 1961-63. He bailed me out of a Captain's Mast in Mayport FL once - good guy. Another duty station we
had in common was The Hawk. I took Kitty on her maiden voyage around the Horn in 1961, and Capt. Hubbard was 13th CO
of the Hawk 15 May 1975 to 20 Nov 1976.

Fighter Squadron 124 at NAS Moffett Field for F-8 training and subsequently to Fighter Squadron 24 at NAS Alameda as Safety

ENS Gregory Hall USN & Father Willow Grove NAS May 2008 Greg was a Hospital Corpsman attached to the U.S.
Marine Corps MAG-49 when he received his Ensign Comission in May 2008. Does that look like a proud Father with him?
Greg is a Penn State grad, and I think we will be calling him Dr. Hall some day.

CWO3 George L. Briley and
CWO4 John E. Ingram, Jr. were both Bandmaster of the Pacific Fleet Band in Hawaii - Mr. Briley 1956 to 1959 and Mr. Ingram 1974 to 1976. I served with Jack when he was an MU1 with COMCARDIV FOUR in Fleet Band 194 in 1961-62; and I served under Mr. Briley when he was Bandmaster of Band 85 at CINCLANTFLT in 1963.

Pacific Fleet Band History
|
|
I met Jack Ingram at the Navy School of Music in
1960 when it was at the Anacostia Naval Station in Washington D.C. We went to sea with Unit Band 194, which was assigned
to Commander, Carrier Division Four. Jack was the LPO with 194, and Chief Joe Gallagher was Bandmaster. We
served together on the USS Kitty Hawk, USS Forrestal, USS Shangri-La and USS F. D. Roosevelt. I lost track of Jack after
that, but I understand he was at the Naval Academy Band at Annapolis, and became Bandmaster of the Pacific Fleet Band in Hawaii.
I think Jack's father was CO of a Naval Base in the South. I met his wife a few times, but don't know if he ever had
children. I liked Jack, and we had many great times overseas. After leaving COMCARDIV 4, I went to Band 85 at CINCLANTFLT
and worked for Bandmaster George Briley. I was a short timer then, and spent most of my time doing civilian gigs on
keyboards, and mostly drums for official gigs. It was all I could do to make Colors on time at SACLANT. Mr.
Briley can attest to that!

Gary Duane Poorman RM1 Obit
|
|
Gary Poorman was a good
egg. Although we were related, I met him for the first time when I was about 14 years old. He was about three
years older than I, and he went to Lock Haven High School with my cousin, Tyler Hammond. Gary always treated me well.
He would let me watch him operate his ham radio, and let me talk to people on it. Pretty neat. They lived on East
Main Street at the canal, cattie corner across the street from my Great Uncle Bill Stoddart's near the Roxy. Uncle
Bill lived on the other side of the street, and the other side of the canal. I remember when Gary went into the Navy.
And I saw him in uniform once or twice. I tried to look him up a couple times over the years, but never connected
with him since high school. Sorry to hear he passed away. May God bless his family. †

A few guys who were at the
U.S. Naval School of Music (SOM) in Anacostia when I was there in 1960-61: Besides the 18 guys assigned to Unit Band 194; here are a few more SOM's . . . Ron Bennett/Trumpet, Ed Barton/Trumpet, Terry Foose, Wyatt Newman/Bass, Larry
Gatewood/Career, Roger Van Heel, Bill Myers, J.J. Ulle/Career, Benny Knop . . .
Wyatt Newman contacted me (2012) and I learned a little about his career . . . Wyatt was a pall bearer at Ron Bennett's
funeral recently - and was amazed at how well known and liked Ron was throughout the State of Texas. (Doesn't suprise
me - Ron was a super great guy!) After SOM, Wyatt spent a year in the Kodiak band with Ron, and his
remaining time in Seattle. Afterward Wyatt did four years with the 41st Army Band (a National Guard band) and retired from that as an E-6. Today he plays upright bass with the Mississippi Community Symphonic Band, and a 7 piece combo called the ClinTones. Thanks for contacting me Wyatt.

Gonna miss you Ron . . . feelin pretty bad today
(3/3/2012), your funeral, a little rainy, very sad. Praying for you, Sheila and your family, and friends. Feeling
their pain, tears. Sheila sent me your obit this morning. Read it several times. Now that you're over, how
about puttin in a few good words for me. I'll be 70 soon, and following right behind you. But I have not been
as good as you, and I'll need a little help. Maybe you can give me a hand. Love you Ron . . . Ken

RON BENNETT |
Ron Bennett was at the U.S.
Navy School of Music (SOM) at Anacostia Naval Receiving Station in Washington DC when I met him in 1961. Even though
he was from Texas, I liked him a lot. (Of course, I still like dubbya a lot too.) Come to think about it, I have
a few friends in TX, Chris Mandel, Mike & Jennifer Butt, Brian Gardner, and my cousin Kelly Haider. Ron played trumpet in his Navy days, and
today he is playing bagpipes at military funerals and other events. After SOM, Ron was stationed at Kodiak NOB, then
went to sea on the USS Constellation CVA-64, USS Ranger CVA-61 and USS DeHaven DD-727. I just received an
email from Sheila and Ron, and am always glad to hear from them. 1/17/2009 kp

Courtesy of U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Doug Forziati carries a folded American
flag after it was passed during the "Olde Glory Presentation," a naval retirement tradition in which the text of
the ceremony is read to music. It is divided into the number of segments needed to represent each of the ranks held by the
retiring member during his or her career.

I had emails from Doug Forziati
in 2008. He's a career Navy musician. It's always good hearing from fellow Navy people. Below is

I had emails from Master Chief
Hughes in 2009, and he gave me the essay that he wrote, "Once I Was A Navyman", for my website. Check
it out, it's very cool, especially in you were in the Navy and can relate! Nice that he mentioned the band in his
essay. Thanks Ed.
